Cross Bite Orleans / Gloucester

A crossbite is a common dental issue, often present in childhood, that doesn't naturally correct itself as the patient ages. It can involve a misalignment between the upper and lower front teeth, back teeth, or both, and the consequences for your health can be significant.

In a typical bite, the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth both at the front and back and on both sides of the mouth. When these two rows of teeth don't meet correctly, it's considered a malocclusion, commonly referred to as a "bad bite," and should be addressed. Crossbites are classified into two main types: posterior and anterior.

A posterior crossbite, defined by Cochrane, occurs when the upper back teeth bite down inside the lower back teeth. This condition affects one to sixteen percent of children before their permanent teeth emerge.

The second type, an anterior crossbite, as reported by Contemporary Clinical Dentistry, occurs when the palate causes the upper front teeth to sit behind the lower front teeth. This type of crossbite has a prevalence rate of four to five percent.

A misaligned bite can lead to various dental problems and other health and emotional issues. The consequences of an untreated crossbite may include tooth decay, gum disease, and stress on the jaw muscles, resulting in headaches and chronic pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, and back.

Cochrane also mentions teeth grinding and abnormal facial growth as potential outcomes of an untreated crossbite. If left uncorrected, facial asymmetry can occur, which may lead to teasing and low self-esteem in children and teenagers.

If you suspect you or your child has a crossbite, it's essential to seek treatment. Addressing this issue can prevent dental problems and improve overall well-being. During treatment, maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial to reduce the risk of cavities. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and use an antibacterial mouthwash, such as Colgate® Advanced Pro-Shield™ Mouthwash, to help prevent plaque buildup in hard-to-reach areas of your mouth.

While crossbites are most effectively treated during childhood, it's never too late to consult THUY-TU NGUYEN, DMD, KEN MARENCO, DDS, DAVID CHAMBERS, DDS, PAUL MARTIN, Perio, DAVID CRAIG, BSC, DDS or an orthodontist for guidance. With the right treatment, you can correct your misaligned bite and enjoy improved oral health and overall well-being.
